Learn more about oil

How does motor oil work?

In a motor, there are numerous moving mechanical parts that come into contact with other parts, generating friction. Lubricants reduce friction, allowing these parts to move freely. This protects the motor from wear and also reduces temperature, increasing energy output. Motor oils also remove impurities and act as sealing agents, protecting against corrosion.

What are oil grades?

The grade of an oil refers to its viscosity.  Most oil grades use two sets of digits (XW-XX), one for viscosity at 0 degrees Fahrenheit/-17.8 degrees Celsius, and the other for the viscosity at 212 degrees Fahrenheit/100 degrees Celsius. Monograde oils are less common nowadays but are still used in some vintage or antique models, or for small engines such as lawnmowers.

Does motor oil expire?

While motor oil should not degrade for a long time when correctly stored, it's not recommended to use oil that's been stored for more than two years. Oil that's become discolored or contains particles and sediment should be discarded.

Why do I need to change car oil more frequently?

High oil consumption can be due to overheating or mechanical defects such as abnormal piston ring and cylinder wear. If you find you need a car oil change more frequently, this should be investigated by a qualified mechanic.

What is synthetic oil?

Synthetic engine oil is formulated from man-made chemical compounds rather than from purified mineral oil.  Synthetic oils perform more effectively than mineral oils, and the synthetic oil change interval is longer. A synthetic oil change can extend the life of your engine, reduce the need for repairs, and enhance fuel efficiency.
