A turbine is a rotating device (or rotating machine) that uses a fluid or gas to set a receiver in motion. Turbines make it possible to transform mechanical energy, either into electrical energy by driving an alternator as a receiver, or into another mechanical energy by driving a dynamic compressor as a receiver.

The vast majority of turbines (90%) are used to rotate alternators that produce electrical energy. Turbines which drive dynamic compressors are found especially in petrochemicals. There are 3 main types of turbines: the hydraulic turbine using water, steam turbine, and gas turbine. There are also lower power and smaller gas turbines derived from airplane turbines (aero-derivative gas turbines).

During the combustion cycle part of the energy produced by a turbine is lost in the form of heat. This heat energy can be recovered locally to produce steam intended, for example, to heat a building (cogeneration) or to drive another turbine (combined cycle).

In order to ensure steam and gas turbines are at their optimal performance turbine oils have the following roles:

  • Reduce friction on moving parts
  • Protect against corrosion (in the presence of humidity)
  • Resist oxidation (in case of high temperatures, to be reinforced for gas turbines)
  • Contribute to cleanliness, by removing impurities such as air and water (especially for steam turbines)
  • Prevent the formation of varnish (hard and colored film which prevents thermal transfer) on the bearings
