Why using specific lubricants for wind turbines?

Because of the difficulties to do with altitude and the maintenance costs associated with wind turbines, oils should be used the properties of which have been approved on current gearboxes. Because of the limited service lives of mineral oils, synthetic technologies based on PAOs have been developed. It is preferable to use products that have been specifically developed and approved for these performance levels – one property that is required in particular is protection against micro-pitting.
A synthetic PAO oil has the following specific advantages:

  • longer intervals between oil changes: up to 5 years,
  • excellent performance at very low temperatures,
  • miscibility with mineral oil.

A new-generation mineral oil has the following specific advantages:

  • longer intervals between oil changes: up to 3 years,
  • excellent protection against corrosion, even in standardised tests in the presence of seawater and acidic water.

Regular monitoring is important by carrying out an oil bath analysis every 6 months ("ANAC Classic” service)
